The Welsh Witches

Y Gwrachod Cymraeg

These illustrations were created to celebrate the wise women, who were essential to rural Welsh communities. Unlike many other countries, during the witch hunts, very few women were killed in Wales. These “witches” were the healers, the matriarchs of communities. It’s also theorised that these welsh women were the blue print of witches being based off of traditional welsh dress: heavy layered dresses and shawls, large black pointed hats and wooden clogs.

I aimed to capture the resilience and mysticism of these women. Portraying these women with the herbs and plants that they used for their holistic medicines and hearty foods that kept communities alive.
